Hradec Kralove is the historical and cultural centre of East Bohemia.

The history of the city stretch beck to midieval times and its beginning dates back to year 1225. Hradec Kralove was at that time the royal fortress town and had already become the centre of East Bohemia in the Middle Ages. It did not loose its importance in any of the following historical periods, for example during the Hussite movement, later as the Bishop's seat, as a military fortress (the battle at Chlum in 1866) etc. Its unique collection of historical sights and structures consists of gothic, rennaisance and baroque monuments. The city also takes pride in its modern architecture monuments from the 20th century. The masterpieces of such architects as Gocar or Kotera and others contributed greatly to gaining the title The Salon of the Republic.
Nowadays it has about one 100 000 inhabitants and represents a centre of modern Czech architecture with theaters, galleries, a music hall, high schools and colleges. There is no doubt that you will find Prague very attractive, easy to live in and still relatively inexpensive.

At one's disposal there are enormous number of restaurants, wine-bars, beer halls, coffee-lounges, internet cafes, confectioneries, tea-rooms and night clubs with entertaining programs. Internet cafes are easy to find.
You can run into cheap places to eat and drink all the time. You can take simply sausages and beer on the city squares or you can try beer and knedle, special Czech dumplings, in one of the small bars or restaurants with atmospheric music. As it is usual also in other countries, the prices in restaurants are different and depend on type, standard or locality of the catering establishment.
Of course we do not forget to mention here Czech national drink - beer, first and foremost worldwide known Pilsner beer, brewed in Pilsen, the city in the Western Bohemia. Many other excellent light and dark beers are also available here - Budvar, Radegast, Gambrinus, Staropramen, Kozel etc. Some beerhouses brew their own beer and it is possible to order an excursion to a brewery.
